China discovers virus that killed 36 after betting tick bites

Antara News, Thu, March 17 2011

Beijing (ANTARA News/Xinhua) - Chinese scientists have discovered a previously unknown virus carried by ticks which led to at least 36 deaths in six provinces by last September, according to the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine published Thursday.

The virus SFTSV (severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome bunyavirus) was recently discovered by scientists at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

People with the virus can experience fever and multiple organ failure.

The presence of the virus was confirmed in 171 patients from six provinces in China. It resulted in at least 36 deaths by September 2010.

CDC Director Wang Yu said between late March and mid-July 2009, symptoms of the infectious disease in humans were reported in rural areas of central Hubei and Henan provinces, but the cause of the symptoms were unknown then.

Major clinical symptoms included fever, thrombocytopenia, gastrointestinal symptoms, and leukocytopenia, and there was "an unusually high initial case fatality rate of 30 percent," Wang said.

Li Dexin, director of the CDC`s virus institute, said farmers living in mountainous areas were most prone to tick bites which were prevalent between May and July.

The virus institute had conducted test on more than 600 shares of patients` blood serum, which showed that the SFTSV was the killer.

Bird flu kills 49,000 Makassar chickens, ducks

Antara News, Sunday, October 10, 2010 03:58 WIB

Makassar, S Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - Bird flu has killed at least 49,000 chickens and ducks in South Sulawesi province over the past four months, a government official said.

Head of South Sulawesi Province`s animal husbandry office Murtala Ali said here Saturday he had ordered related authorities in districts and cities to destroy the infected chickens and ducks.

"We have also prohibited the transportation of chickens from infected areas to other places," he said.

The dead chickens and ducks were found in 11 districts and towns, namely Takalar, Makassar, Luwu Timur, Luwu Utara, Soppeng, Pinrang, Parepare, Sidrap, Barru, Bulukumba and Bone.

Chickens in other 13 districts and towns in South Sulawesi were declared "free from the bird flu virus", he said.

Besides destroying the bird flu-infected animals, Ali said his people had intensified the vaccinization of chickens, spraying chicken nests, and public awareness campaigns.

He said the high rainfall in the province could trigger the spread of bird flu virus to other chickens.

Therefore he had ordered related authorities to halt the transportation of chickens from infected areas to elsewhere in the province.

Despite the concerning situation, the bird flu virus did not endanger local residents, he said.

Four bird flu suspects being hospitalized at Wahidin Sudirohusodo General Hospital here had been confirmed free from the deadly virus infection, he said.

"Nobody has died of flu here over the past two years," he said.

Various parts of Indonesia remain vulnerable to bird flu.

The Balikpapan city government had even declared state of bird flu alertness on October 4, 2010 following the death of 96 chickens last September.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), avian influenza or "bird flu" is a contagious disease of animals caused by viruses that normally infect only birds and, less commonly, pigs.

The WHO has warned that infection with avian influenza viruses could spread very rapidly among the poultry population.

Indonesia has been dealing with bird flu cases since 2005. However, the H5N1 virus is also known to have attacked chickens and birds in other Asian countries, such as Thailand, Cambodia, China, and Viet Nam.

New deadly types of virus found in Papua

Indra Harsaputra, The Jakarta Post, Surabaya | Fri, 10/08/2010 9:37 AM

Scientists from Airlangga University’s Institute of Tropical Diseases (ITD) in Surabaya announced recently the discovery of three new subtypes of the hepatitis B virus in Papua.

ITD research and professor Maria Inge Lusida told The Jakarta Post that currently, the hepatitis B virus was classified by eight genotypes and nine subtypes.

All these types, Maria said, were prevalent across the world and classified based on geographical location, virus characteristics, and the clinical effects that these different types of the virus had on the human body.

“We were surprised when we found three new subtypes of the hepatitis B virus in Papua, one of which was discovered on a Papuan plateau,” she added.

She said the discovery was made in collaboration with Japan’s Kobe University in 2007, adding that scientists at ITD were only now conducting more in-depth clinical analysis of the three subtypes in the hope of understanding the degree of their malignancy.

“In general, the hepatitis B virus is deadly,” Maria said.

She added that authorities across the country should increase awareness of the new strains, although they were found only in Papua, where four infected patients were now receiving extensive treatment.

“We also found that these new strains may create complications for HIV/AIDS patients. The government needs to remain vigilant on this matter, as the number of HIV-infected people in Papua is considerably high,” Maria said.

Hepatitis B affects the liver, with the acute illness causing liver inflammation and other liver-related complications, such as cirrhosis, cancer, hepatic confusion and coma, and bleeding in the upper part of a patient’s digestive system.

Acute hepatitis takes six months to become chronic, however, about 90 percent of hepatitis patients, if they recover, develop strong immunity during this period. Without medication, their condition deteriorates within 10 or 20 years into cirrhosis and finally liver cancer.

Similar to HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B transmission occurs most frequently when a person comes into contact with infected blood, Maria says.

Health Minister Endang Rahayu Sedyaningsih claimed around 30 million Indonesians were currently living with hepatitis B and C.

Boost your immune system against Swine flu

The Swine flu virus will only multiply and lead to disease if the immune system is weak. Most viruses become less aggressive over time because they want to spread and not kill their hosts. Hence the general advice, cover your face when sneezing, and WASH YOUR HANDS. If Swine flu kills its hosts they will die as well.

The following advice will help to strengthen your immune system in preparation for viruses such as Swine flu. You will increase your resistance if you have a good digestive system. Take probiotics daily, available in health food stores in the form of yogurt culture, and also chocolate.

Get plenty of sleep, the body knows how to heal, and it does this best when sleeping. You can increase your resistance to disease 300% if you get enough rest.

Make sure you stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, this allows the body to flush toxins.

Exercise increases your resistance to disease. It stimulates the cleansing blood flow. Exercise does not have to be strenuous to be beneficial. Science has shown that walking daily is good for your health and well being. Sunshine can also help, as this increases the level of vitamin d within the body.

In a small town called Chirchik, Russia, a flu epidemic swept the town. When many adults and children did not get sick scientists wanted to know why they were immune to the disease. It turns out that all of them used the berries from an herb called Shizandra.

Goldenseal strengthens the immune system, cleanses and detoxifies the body. It has anti bacteria properties.

Astragalus boosts the immune system and generates anticancer cells in the body. It is also a powerful antioxidant and protects the liver from toxins. This makes this plant ideal for people suffering from dark circles due to liver problems and depressed immune system. IMPORTANT: Do not take this herb if fever is present.

Include in the diet chlorella, garlic and pearl barley. These foods contain germanium, a trace element beneficial for the immune system. Also giant red kelp contains iodine, calcium, iron, carotene, protein, riboflavin and vitamin C, which are necessary for the immune system’s functional integrity.

All Good Plans Get Sidetracked

I made it to the gym yesterday morning and the day seemed to be starting out well. But by 10 a.m. my stomach was cramping--bad. I was home in bed by noon. Even after I slept for a couple of hours, my stomach was still cramping. Then I got nauseated. I hadn't eaten anything, so I didn't have anything to throw up. I had bad cramps on the left side of my abdomen that felt like I was being stabbed. Today I still feel light-headed and a little nauseated. So I'm staying home.

I feel like such a loser. I have been sick, in one way or another, for more than a month. My job sucks. I have too many things to do around my house with no money and little help. Into that i brought a new puppy that's still trying to get acclimated to a schedule. I am stressed all of the time. So I am sick all of the time.

I used to work for this guy a long time ago who said, "My mother always told me, 'Cheer up. It could be worse.' And you know what? It got worse." Cheery words, eh?

So I'm working on getting back into the swing of things. It will take a little longer than I planned. But when did anything I plan work out on the first try anyway?

Virus Alert

Recently I managed to get a bad ass virus that filled up my 50gig free space in about 10 mintues by keep filling the space with crap, result: the need to reformat laptop!

In an attempt to stop you falling prey and getting a nasty computer virus I thought I would show you what to look out for.

Have you ever wondered what computer viruses might look like?

The following set of 3D images of electronic viruses were created by artist Alex Dragulescu. This one shows a Netsky email worm, still the most consistent threat to email traffic.

The artisit turned the viruses into artwork after an internet security firm worked out the programming codes for some of the most common ones. This one shows ghost spyware.

This is an encoded Trojan agent which are endlessly variable so they can escape detection. As the name suggests, trojans are disguised to be more destructive than they first seem.

Storm Malicious is aggressively spreading software which has formed one of the largest automated virus systems in history with two million computers under its control.

The Russian obesity email is a text and image-based spam which preys on recipients' personal insecurities through direct subjects like "Ever heard that you're getting fat".

This image shows a phishing attack. It needs the recipient to confirm their details, often saying it is improving security for online banking.

So I hope you are better advised now, and remember - always use protection!!!

Back where it started

This week I decided to go back to Vaughan Town as an anglo just as I started one year ago - since then I have done 20 programs, and have enjoyed each of them, its good to see how much I've grown looking back.

The week was full of talented people from all over the world and each person participanted fully, which made the week fly by - as usual it hard to say goodbye at the end but there were a few 'master' students who I'm bound to see again as they have to do 4 programs before they finish.

So what did the week have install? Well we did a Christmas theme Vaughan Town - Marissa read Twas the night before Xmas in Spanglish! We had carols, a Xmas tree and eggnog!

Having thrown down that gauntlet Rob had to pull out something big - no not that!!!!

He did a portrait of yours truly in 5 minutes!! and it was awesome: its now on my wall at home - this was his present to me for Xmas which got me a little teary.
