Exercising More but Not Losing Weight?

I've been keeping to my New Year's Resolution of raising my walking schedule to twenty miles a week. I wasn't keeping track of my walking mileage before this, but it was probably averaging only about seven miles per week.

I didn't make any plans on changing my diet for a couple of months, but was just going to focus on the increased exercise. I'm already feeling much better with the increased exercise. I've got more energy and am in a better mental and emotional spirit. But I haven't lost any weight and it's been over a month now!

But I do feel more toned, and though I didn't measure myself at the beginning, it's quite likely I'm losing a bit in inches around most parts of my body. My sister is trained as a dietician. She says they were told muscle is three times as dense as fat. Meaning a pound of fat takes up three times as much space as a pound of muscle. So she thinks I've added a little bit of muscle and have lost some fat. The scale doesn't show this difference at all, but if it's true, it would be a big improvement.

I've done over two hours of research on the web, trying to find the definitive answer for the muscle versus fat density question. (This is as good procrastination as any for delaying my walk today ;-)) There are a lot of conflicting answers out there. If anyone has a good online reference, and more encouragement for those of us who have started exercising but don't see the good results on their scales, please let us know!

Another Boring Day in My Life

Thus far, today is going better than yesterday. Got in a good sculpting class. Did a few minutes on the elliptical and did a few minutes of walking, also. So it's all good.

I feel better today than yesterday. I got some sleep last night.

Other than those few things, there's not much else to report. I didn't do a lot yesterday. I can't remember much of my dreams last night—I'm still working on remembering them. It's takes practice. They say if you just lie still after waking up, it's easier to remember them. But I don't have time to do that. I usually have to get up right away and get heading out the door. I pack my lunch at night because I don't leave myself enough time to do it in the morning. (But that's a good idea anyway. You don't leave yourself room to cheat if you are prepared.)

So today I am boring—unlike any other day. Ha. Until tomorrow.

Today is a Bust

Well, today has been a total bust. I didn't sleep much at all last night, yet I still went to the gym this morning. There I was pumping away on an elliptical when it hit me: What in the hell am I doing at the gym when I feel this bad? The main reason I got up and went was because I thought my work out partner would be there. Not. When I first woke up I thought I should stay home, but no, I had to get up and go. Lesson well learned.

So then I decided to stay home and not venture in to work today. So then I didn't have the Internet. A big wind storm here apparently messed up the cable and blah, blah, blah. It's just now was turned back on.

So this is it for the day. I didn't do much as far as exercise goes, and I'm still tired. So no good post today. Until tomorrow--take care.

B on facebook...

Last week, a The B-Life reader sent around this facetious take on facebook, or in this case "pensionbook". While social networking sites like MySpace and facebook definitely have their benefits, one has to ask when it's gotten a little out of control. Advanced technology allows us to create and foster several relationships simultaneously at a much faster pace due to ease of communication and access to everyone at any point in time. Just think - you can send a text message in 7 seconds flat when it used to take 5 days to send a similar message via the US Postal Service back in '95. But while relationships can happen in a New York minute, are they as deep? I mean, just because facebook says you have 535 friends...do you really have 535 friends? Forget baseball, let's address the "pluses" and"minuses" of one of America's new favorite pastimes.

facebook Pros:

-Reconnecting with old friends
-Avoiding the mass email with a "note"
- Sharing photos without creating annoying logins
-Getting a mini-background check on your date
-The wall (now you don't have to memorize a million email addresses!)

facebook Cons:
-You can't do ANYTHING on the slick...(that feed is no joke!)
-Tagged photos - It's too easy to get caught out there looking crazy.
-All those applications - Seriously, what is a funwall/trendsetter/poke? I'm confused!
-"Stalking" is a little too easy
-You can't repeat an outfit - those pics will get you every time.
-Relationship status....it causes drama, plain and simple. Just leave it off - trust me!
-The random "friend" - (who are these people???)

Iffy facebook behavior...
-Shared FB pages - Just because you have a boyfriend, girlfriend, fiancee', or cat doesn't mean you need a dual facebook page.
-Posting photos of your newborn(s) - I mean, it's kinda cute, but shouldn't you be too busy to be on facebook?
-Exchanging more than 4 wall posts - I love the wall, but after a certain point, it's time to pick up the phone or send an email.

Words of Wisdom

My wisdom tooth has broken and needed to be "extracted" - torn from my head more like!!!

What I hoped would be a 2 minute "lets see what we have here then" operation - turned into a 1:30 hour tug a war.

Well 10 stitches later and 80 euros lighter I managed to leave the dentist - however I now look and talk like Stallone! Didn't see that coming.

Why do they do two things, firstly assure you it wont hurt; it always bloody hurts - especially having to pay and secondly talk to you when you have more instruments in your mouth than the philharmonic orchestra?! Lucky for me oooOOOOWWW is the same in ANY language!

What it did give me time to do what think about a few sketch ideas for my next Vaughan town; boy I'm sad!
Well, what else was I supposed to do when every time I opened my eyes different implement's were inserted into my mouth, the dentist himself started off looking quiet normal, but by the time he had finished and I opened my eyes he was wearing protective glasses, and welders mask, a smock, gloves - and I'm sure he had American Footballers shoulder pads on too!

and worse still I have to return in a week! - wish me luck!

UN Makes Water Top Priority

Excerpt:

By EDITH M. LEDERER, Associated Press Writer/ Thu Jan 24, 10:50 PM ET

DAVOS, Switzerland - U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon urged the world on Thursday to put the looming crisis over water shortages at the top of the global agenda this year and take action to prevent conflicts over scarce supplies.

He reminded business and political leaders at the World Economic Forum that the conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan was touched off by drought — and he said shortages of water contribute to poverty and social hardship in Somalia, Chad, Israel, the Palestinian territories, Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Haiti, Colombia and Kazakhstan.

"Too often, where we need water we find guns instead," Ban said. "Population growth will make the problem worse. So will climate change. As the global economy grows, so will its thirst. Many more conflicts lie just over the horizon."

He said a recent report identified 46 countries with 2.7 billion people where climate change and water-related crises create "a high risk of violent conflict" and a further 56 countries, with 1.2 billion people "are at high risk of violent conflict." The report was by International Alert, an independent peacebuilding organization based in London.

Ban told the VIP audience that he spent 2007 "banging my drum on climate change," an issue the Forum also had as one of its main themes last year. He welcomed the focus on water this year saying the session should be named: "Water is running out."

"We need to adapt to this reality, just as we do to climate change," he said. "There is still enough water for all of us — but only so long as we can keep it clean, use it more wisely, and share it fairly."

Ban said he will invite world leaders to "a critical high-level meeting" in September to focus on meeting U.N. development goals — including cutting by half the number of people without access to safe drinking water by 2015 — particularly in Africa.

Ban's call for global action on water got strong support from several top business executives.

"Water is today's issue," said Andrew Liveris, chairman and CEO of Dow Chemical Co., the world's second largest chemical company. "It is the oil of this century, not a question." E. Neville Isdell, chairman and CEO of The Coca-Cola Co., said "this is an issue which ranks next to climate change. ... However, water has got lost as part of the climate change debate."

End of excerpt.

~~~~~
This is the crisis I have been talking and warning about for the last 10 years and writing about because it is so important to me because it is the environmental crisis of this generation. And as this article also states, water is the new oil of the 21st century. If we do not come together this year to make water scarcity, waste, inept management, wasteful and outdated agricultural practices, and our contribution to it by our own selfish behavior regarding precipitating climate change a top priority, droughts and water shortages will lead to widespread famine, floods, desertification, and climate refugees who will do what they must do to get the water they need to survive.
So I thank the UN for putting this out here, only I do not believe Coca Cola and Nestle will ever be a real part of the solution to this until they stop the wasteful practice of bottling water for profit and working to privitize public water sources that benefit them at the expense of the poor. Will they then see the light and see something other than their own profits as more important in this? For me that is the only action that will show their sincerity.
The question is: Would you kill to get water? Let's hope we never have to find out.
book review: the south beach diet
I've been doing a bit of research, as part of my plan to take control of my diet, feel healthier and STOP GAINING WEIGHT. Oh, and I'd like to fend off cancer, too.
The South Beach Diet was written by cardiologist, Arthur Agatson, "in order to reverse the myriad of heart and vascular problems that stem from obesity" (p.7). Web MD describes South Beach as "a heart-friendly version of the Atkins Diet."
The premise of the diet is that we feel better and lose weight when our insulin levels are regulated and that the way to do this is by consuming mostly foods with with a lower glycemic index (because I am lazy, I am going to let Wiki fill you in on the details).
The book promises that you will lose eight to thirteen pounds in the first two weeks of the diet (I think the idea is that a quick success will get you motivated), known as Phase 1. And the cover of the edition that I borrowed from the library offered the added bonus, "Lose Belly Fat First!"
Who wouldn't love a diet that offered quick results (although Dr. Agatson is very careful to say that weight loss does slow down in the second phase of the diet, when some previously forbidden foods are reintroduced) and that promised to trim fat from what for many of us (especially those of us who've had babies) is a source of considerable angst? And there is lots in this diet that does make sense.
I know that lean protein makes me feel more full and that, if I get too hungry and let my blood sugar drop, I become a little hysterical (my youngest son is very like me in this. If he gets too hungry, he becomes a little terror. The transformation once he is fed is truly remarkable). I also know that I feel much better when I avoid white sugar.
But I have to say that I am a little leery of a diet that prescribes bacon and eggs for breakfast most mornings and that frowns on whole grain bread (although Agatson does say that whole grains are much better than their refined counterparts).
And I know all to well what a bad idea it can be to try any diet that makes you feel deprived of foods you love.
What I am taking from this diet:
  • A good reminder to follow my naturopathic doctor's advice and avoid refined sugar.
  • Eat smaller meals and avoid getting too hungry.
  • Have snacks with good, healthy proteins.
  • Avoid refined carbohydrates (I seldom bother with a bun when I have a burger and I don't have bread with dinner, usually. Avoiding carb-centred snacks, especially when we can't have nuts in the house, is more of a challenge).
I am keen to learn more about the glycemic index and how it affects metabolism, so expect more from me on this subject in the future.
I would also love to hear from any of you have successfully (or unsuccessfully) followed the South Beach Diet. What was your experience like? Does the diet work as a long-term lifestyle? Did all the saturated fats send your cholesterol through the roof?
I have been surprised by how much interest my posts on diet have generated. It seems that some of you actually are not bored when I write about what I've been eating.
This week, I made another small change based on setting S.M.A.R.T. goals: I eliminated the bedtime snack and stopped eating two hours before bedtime (food eaten late at night doesn't get burned off and I feel better when I wake up hungry).
Next week, I will eat fish at least once.
Pedometers as a Weight Loss Gadget
There's been several studies that show pedometers can be helpful to encourage people to get moving and walk more.
In this other study from a few years ago, researchers found that sedentary women had a higher BMI and a higher belly fat ratio than more active women. This would seem obvious to most people but the numbers are interesting anyway. Here 80 middle-aged women wore a pedometer without changing their activity level for a week. The researchers measured their body mass index (BMI) as well as waist and hips (to determine belly fat).
The average sedentary person walks 2,000-3,000 steps per day.
This study found that women who typically walked less than 6,000 steps had a BMI of 29, 44% body fat, a 37-inch waist, 42-inch hips, and a 0.87 waist-to-hip ratio.
6,000 to 10,000 steps had a BMI of 26, 35% body fat, a 32-inch waist, 40-inch hips, and a 0.80 waist-to-hip ratio.
10,000 steps or more had a BMI of 23, 26% body fat, a 29-inch waist, 29-inch hips, and a 0.75 waist-to-hip ratio.
Basically those who walked less had more total fat, and more centrally located fat.
Walking 10,000 steps is doable in 30 minutes time.
The pedometer shown above costs less than $20. It's the best-selling Omron Pedometer
(Don't) b a fashion don't...For the Fellas - Part 1
Alright gentleman, this one if for you. And ladies, please send this link to you male friends.
This post was inspired by a friendly debate had in a Harlem-bound cab this past weekend. Some looks are completely unacceptable, but somehow, a few of the fellas didn't get the memo. I can't speak for all women, but I can share a few of wisdoms that were exchanged during our $18 cab ride.
1. "If I see a man in a fur coat, I'm calling PETA."
Even the godfather can't pull off this look without looking like the the winter edition of the Coca-Cola polar bear.
2. "If you're not Diddy, JD, or Marc Anthony (or fresh from laser surgery) - sunglasses are NOT to be worn inside."
Why this is so hard to conceptualize? It's never OK. And no, its really not OK to have them on top of your head either.
3. "If you're not a 7 yr. old girl vacationing in Jamaica, please take those beads out of your head!"
This one is pretty obvious, but it's pure comedy.
4. "Please don't wear a shirt tighter than mine."
Don't get me wrong, I love a man in a slim/tailored silhouette, but I don't need to see his nipples. Plus, it's cutting off your circulation boo!
5. "Doo rags are a don't."
It's hard to even figure out when those were ever appropriate (with the exception of the set of Boyz in the Hood and Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid).
6. "Your (clip-on) earrings should never be bigger than mine."
In addition to looking as if you just rummaged through your mama's jewelry box, you're also reminding me that your rocks might be hotter than mine...and that's just selfish.
7. "Pinky rings are more feminine than you think."Just trust me. It says 1 of 2 things. A.) I'm such a show-off that I had to bling-out smallest finger or B) I like man-jewelry so much that my pinky just had to have it.
If you or someone you know falls victim to one, two, or all seven of these offenses, do not be ashamed. Small baby steps will lead to large strides in becoming a fashion do. Love ya!
No rest for the wicked
So with only one days rest I'm back at Vaughan Town! This week we have several veterans (people who have done the program before), so me being me - like to make my life hard, decided to try some new things out in both the afternoon activities and in the entertainment section.
The only problem is, I have lots of ideas but little time to put them together - however I have some free time coming up (several weeks in fact) so maybe I'll get busy working on scripts / plays etc.
This group was very business focused and had high expectations of the Anglos I felt, bearing in mind the Anglos are volunteers and not necessarily professionals in any specific capacity. However I think after a few ideas and reminders everyone came together but it took a while to warm up.
The evenings entertainment helped get people to relax and come together a bit more - I hope they do, for their own enjoyment. I did some new material which kicked my ass as I only had 3 days to work on it, but they enjoyed it, so that was good - always listen to your mom she knows best, right!?
My dance nearly killed me, really the mask is impossible to breathe in! We had a great workout, an improv coach, singers and dancers "rock and roll people"!
As for the "master" student I pushed them a little more by getting them to work on storytelling - which is more difficult than simply giving a presentation, they rose to the challenge I'm peased to say.
No snow as yet, but its still there waiting to pounce. The hotel still have a lot of work in the customer service department and several other areas, the service like the food is becoming less and less - I think we need a break from each other (in my opinion) but we will see if this improves as time goes on. I'm actually looking forward to trying the new venue in Montfrague should be nice to have a bunch of fresh faces and personalities.
As usual all the weeks photos can be found here
making music, taking action
As I have written before, I am a big fan of singer-songwriter Eve Goldberg. Her voice is pure and clear and her songs always move me. Her most recent album, A Kinder Season, recorded in the months after her mother passed away from breast cancer, was the balm and inspiration that helped me get through the initial shock and pain of my own cancer diagnosis.
You can listen to audio clips from each of her albums on her web site. Go check her out (and buy her music. You won't regret it).
Very recently, though, Eve has released a new song, one with a very important message. The following is from her website:
This month marks the launch of my new song "The Streets of Burma." I wrote this song after watching the TV news last fall and seeing the powerful images of monks and nuns in Burma peacefully taking to the streets to protest against the military dictatorship. Their protests were brutally suppressed. Watching these events unfold from half a world away, I was outraged, and concerned for the people of Burma. The TV news has moved on to other, more "exciting" events, but what has happened to the monks and nuns? What has happened to the ordinary citizens in Burma who long for peace and democracy? That's where my song "The Streets of Burma" was born.
And I'm proud to announce that Amnesty International has decided to use the song as part of its campaign to help free U Gambira, one of the monks arrested following the protests. You can listen to and download the song by clicking on the link above left, and you can find out more about the campaign at www.amnesty.ca/streetsofburma/
Please support Amnesty International's important work in this area.
The song is lovely and haunting. You can download at the Amnesty site or on Eve's own website (where you can also make make a donation to the Amnesty campaign).
Drain On The Mediterranean
When is the international community going to get into a serious discussion about population growth and its contributions to this crisis? Is it not irresponsible to continue population increases without adequate resources to sustain humans? If people in these regions wish to have water they must realize THEIR part in the problem and work to be the solution. It is simply insane to keep pumping all of this water out knowing the conditions it is creating while continuing population increases. Especially in light of warnings from the IPCC for this region in relation to climate change which is now also a great factor in lower water levels.
Drain On The Mediteranean/Water Usage Up
Excerpt:
Freshwater has always been a scarce commodity in the semi-arid Mediterranean. It has 7 percent of the world's population, but only 3 percent of its freshwater resources. And the UN-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report predicts that global warming may lead to less rainfall and more evaporation in the region, further reducing the supply of water.
Half the world's "water poor" -- that is, people whose access to freshwater is deemed inadequate -- live in the Mediterranean region, mostly on the sea's eastern and southern shores. By 2025, the Blue Plan predicts that due to population growth and expanding agriculture, the number of water poor in the region could be as high as 165 million in 2025, up from 108 million in 2000.
B fed during NY 2008 Winter Restaurant Week...
NYC Restaurant Week - Winter 2008 is back, so it's time to get your taste on at some of the city's premiere establishments, and stick to that 2008 budget at the same time. As long as you dine between January 21-25 or January 28 - February 1, you'll get a 3-course lunch for $24.07 and dinner for $35.00.
The B-Life
picks are below:
KITTICHAI
The origami-filled, zen vibe at Kittichai lends to the perfect laid-back "scene". Chef Ian's mastery of Thai specialty dishes definitely won't disappoint.
REDEYE GRILL
Redeye is super-inviting and has one of the most enviable selections of seafood in NY. The restaurant is always loud and buzzing because this spot is no secret to midtown's fresh fish seekers.
CALLE OCHO
Te gusta comida Latina? If so, Calle Ocho is a fun Upper West Side restaurant that's great for groups! Ceviche is their specialties.
ASIA DE CUBA
Ps. I'm hoping my dinner club will choose Asia de Cuba, a highly touted Latin/Asian fusion spot, for our next outing.
Enjoy!
they like me!
The following email was waiting in my inbox when I got back from yoga this afternoon:
"Dear Not Just About Cancer Blog Author,
Our editors recently reviewed your blog and have given it a 9.5 score out of (10). Your blog is currently ranked in the top 3 in the Conditions and Diseases category of Blogged.com. This is quite an achievement!
http://www.blogged.com/directory/health/conditions-and-diseases
We evaluated your blog based on the following criteria: Frequency of Updates, Relevance of Content, Site Design, and Writing Style. After carefully reviewing each of these criteria, your site was given its 9.5 score.
Please accept my congratulations on a blog well-done!"
How cool am I? OK, so I don't think I've ever heard of Blogged.com (although I will pay attention to them, now!) and I don't remember submitting my blog to them (although I may well have). And the "Conditions and Diseases" category cracks me up (although I'm pleased to say that you can find me near the top of their Health section, not just in the "Diseases").
But still. Some people who read lots of blogs reviewed mine and thought it deserved 9.5 out of 10.
I'll accept the compliment, happily.
And that part of me that remains in Mme. Delorme's Grade Four class (Madame Delorme was really tough. And I worshipped her)? That part of me's wondering what happened to the other 0.5.
