BMKG warns harmful acid rains in Indonesia

Adianto P. Simamora, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Wed, 06/23/2010 9:21 PM

Contrary to the clean look in rainwater pouring the country’s land, the weather agency finds most of the  rainwater contains harmful pollutions that are feared to harm environment and affect human health.

The weather agency categorized the polluted rainwater as acid rains with acidity scale having gone down the tolerable level of 5.6.

A report by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) shows acidity level of the  rainwater, measured by potential for hydrogen (pH), in Jakarta, Bogor (West Java), Pontianak (West Kalimantan) and Manado (North Sulawesi) was among the lowest in the country.

“The sharp decline of the pH level of rainwater has hit most areas in Indonesia with the worst was recorded in big cities,” Edvin Aldrian, BMKG’s climate change and air quality unit head, told The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

The data says acidity level of the rainwater in Jakarta was 4.52, Manado with 4.22, Pontianak was 4.29, while the rain city of Bogor was 4.40 last year.

The pH measures the amount of acid in rainwater with the scale of 0-14. The normal rainwater has a pH of 5.6. The lower scale of pH, the worse is rainwater quality.

The BMKG issued annual report of acidity level of the rainwater.

Karawang flood victims get free medical treatment

Antara News, Friday, April 2, 2010 20:41 WIB

Karawang, W Java (ANTARA News) - Hundreds of flood victims in Karawang district, West Java, on Friday received free medical treatment from the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI).

The chief of the PMI branch in Karawang, Eli Amalia, asked flood victims to always check their health because they were highly vulnerable to flood-related diseases.

"The PMI branch in Karawang will maintain a health command post until the end of the emergency response period (on April 4). The command post`s task is merely to help check the flood victims` health," he said.

He said during the emergency response period the district government would focus its attention on providing maximum health services to the flood victims.

Anom, a flood victim, said she came to the PMI health command post because she could not afford to see a doctor.

"When flood water inundated my house I did not evacuate because I hoped the flood water would recede soon. But after it did not recede for few days I decided to evacuate. Maybe because I was too much exposed to flood water, I developed itches," the 57-year old woman said.

Floods triggered by the overflowing of the Citarum river affected at least nine subdistricts in Karawang last month.

Telukjambe Timur subdistrict was the hardest hit by the floods with 17,658 homes inundated.

The floods inundated at least 7.517 homes in Karawang Barat subdistrict, 1,533 homes in Pakisjaya subdistrict, 1,308 homes in Rengasdengklok subdistrict, 1,192 homes in Jayakerta subdistrict, 604 homes in Telukjambe Barat subdistrict, 412 homes in Karawang Timur subdistrict, 250 homes in Batujaya subdistrict, 97 homes in Klari subdistrict and 81 homes in Ciampel subdistrict.

Wondering whether the weather will get better?

I'm feeling much better today. And I don't feel as bloated. I didn't weigh myself, so I don't know if I lost anything.

I have a personal training session on Monday. I'm hoping that will get me back on track. I've been floundering for a while now.

I don't have a lot to say. I've sick for so long, I haven't done anything worth talking about. I will be glad when this winter is over. I've been so sick this year. I looked back through my posts, and I couldn't believe how many times I talked about being sick. So I've had enough. The weather is supposed to be better this weekend.

OK. I'm hoping to have more to tell next week.

Sick of Snow And Sick

I have been sick since last Wednesday. This virus really hangs on. I haven't been to the gym since last week. My diet has fallen apart and I gained four pounds since I first got sick. I think it's because I'm lying around—not really doing anything and, of course, eating too much. I feel very bloated and crappy, almost hung over.

The weather here remains crappy as well. This morning a surprise snow storm brought traffic to a halt—getting to work took more than an hour. It's usually a fifteen-minute drive.

But I have something I'm working on that's bringing me some pleasure. I'll let you know what if the time is ever right.

I need to get back to work.

Exactly when is spring? Not 'til March? Ugh.

I'm still doing great with the diet, but the exercise has fallen off. I just can't get moving in the morning. Part of my problem is the season. I hate winter. It depresses me. And right now I couldn't be more down in the dumps. Today it's 18 degrees F. There's about two inches of snow out there. It's cold, snowy, and icy. Not a combination I'm rearing to get out into. And there's no school today and several other things have been cancelled. So unless you're 12 years old or under, and got a sled for Christmas, today is pretty much a write off.

But my diet is still going OK. I can say that much.

Well, I've got to go dust a pile of snow from my car and get going. Maybe I will make it out. Wish me luck.

Getting Restless

My life has been pretty boring lately. Nothing much has happened for a while. I just go to the gym, go to work, and then go home. At least we're having good weather today—even if it is just a tease. So I think I'll go for a walk at lunch time. Wow. The excitement never ends.

My weight is still remaining close to the same. But I have put on a couple of pounds. I think that had something to do with the switch in thyroid medication. But I have been eating too much lately. I'm trying to get it under control. I need spring weather in a bad way. I'd like to get Chance out of the house. So much needs done at home, too. Grrrr. I'm ready for spring.

Let's see. So I've been thinking a lot about regret. Does it do any good to regret your past? The things you should've done? The things you shouldn't have? The people you've let down? The people you've hurt? I wish I had a time machine. But I don't. All I can do is ask for forgiveness. Say I'm sorry I hurt you. And hope that I am forgiven. If I'm not, I have to accept it.

I'm thinking of starting a new blog. There's so much more I want to talk about. But I can't really do it here.
