The time has come

OK, its arrived! My birthday that is - woe is me!

At least I can play with my monkey and so can you, just touch it, go on...

Although a word of warning be careful what you wish for!

I looked at myself long and hard and realized it's ME I don't like (shock, horror)!
Not the inner me, but the outerside. So I am going to change that.
I currently weigh too much - 16 stone (102 kgs) - which means I'm clinically obese (sobs in a corner).
When I was fighting about 10 years ago my weight was 92kg (still too heavy), I was the lightest heavyweight, which meant I moved faster than they did but they hit harder, and I would have to fight some huge men (as anything over 90kg was open weight).

The best weight I have been is 13.5 stone at this I looked and felt good - although the doctors claim 11.5 stone is my optimum. I personally know that just wouldn't suit me or my body type.
I'm a endomorph - that means I will always be big - I can accept that, but the medical charts we still refer to are over 60 years old now, they need updating.

So I will start a program to get fitter and healthier and I will keep my loyal readers informed as to how it is progressing on a monthly basis. When I used to work as a personal trainer I would design a 12 weeks program, then change it to keep the body working hard and not plateauing as it gets used to the requirements of the exercises.

So my wish for this birthday is a simply one - by next year to weigh less and look and feel better than this year.

The big 3 ohhh!

As another year passes by and another birthday looms around the corner I'm reminded yet again that I'm getting old! If you know me you will know I have issues with aging.
I have been 28 for quite some time now (several years in fact), but its now obvious I'm not 28, so 30 is the new 28!!

So how is old age treating me, well I have several health issues I need to see a Doctor to get sorted (I don't like Doctors), I'm getting a beer belly (need to exercise, I know), I'm grey (being that since I was 15, keep shaving head to hide it), my body aches more now than it ever has (again exercise), I have mental health issues (baggage that still haunts me and I cannot cut it free) but nothing that serious, I guess.

I am the kind of person who has all the answers for everyone else and will be there to help anyone in anyway I can, but I have no answers for myself and hardly ever ask for help. Why? Well, I have been looking out for myself and others all my life, really its true.

As a child my family life was abusive and disruptive and I became 'the man of the house' at around 7/8 years of age, having to look after myself my brother (punch) and mother. My life was VERY unstable and afforded me little comfort by making friends, as we would continually move from place to place.
I was born in Stoke on Trent but I have lived almost all over the middle of England; from Manchester to London. I never really had what you would call a 'childhood', sure I played games with other kids and had a few friends but it was always taken away just when it got comfortable, so I learnt to build defences and hardly ever really gotten close to anyone to make friends - at least something I couldn't walk away from at a moments notice.

I find it hard to trust people or really open up and share my inner thoughts, this has led to problems of it's own of course. Also I still have unresolved issues personal ones and emotional ones, and I don't think they will ever be sorted.

Several years ago I sat down and started to write a book about my life - this was before all these horror stories of peoples childhoods had came out. I had done lots of work but struggled with the time line, it's hard to remember exactly when things happened when you were a child, anyway it was all saved on my computer. I went to work and when I was gone the water tank burst and blew up my computer and I lost all the data. That was the end of that, at least it was cathatic I guessed.
Then around 6 months later whilst I was shopping in Tesco I picked up a book A CHILD CALLED IT; I had never heard of it before, it just stood out for some reason.
Anyway when I read it I was horrified to see it was my story; well very nearly! There of course were differences but it was SO similar it was frightening. I read the second and third book which bared no similarity to my life at all, but it was good to know that Dave turned well in the end; there was hope for me yet.

I wonder will China actually contact me this birthday, I haven't herad from her and I miss her SO much and want to say so much to her, but I cant.
Just know you are always in my thoughts Chinagirl.

I feel that I have not made the impact on the world I was wanting to and I've not accomplished all I wanted; yet the strange thing is, I don't know what it is I want to accomplish?!

Happy birthday to me!!!

So yet another year passes - and I still haven't aged (mentally anyway).
So what did I get for my birthday this year, well would it surprise you if I said I now am the owner of the PlayStation3 - yes I couldn't wait for the Metal Gear Solid one that I may or may not be able to get my hands on - for sure I will get the game, so what the hell.

Also you can't have a great machine like that without a TV to match so as I don't own one anymore, I bought a new HD TV and very nice it is too ;)

I'm now in Palencia visiting Sandra's family; may as well get to know them as we are together and now she is expecting our baby on 24th November! Amazing really as you (China) was born on 26th November!? Well I sent you a text, you are the first person I have let know, you are still muy importante (very important) to me!

And I also know that was the last time I get to spend so much on myself :'(

Anyone who knows what I do now as a job - will probably know how well I dance or not hehe - so when I saw this I was very impressed with the concept and dancing!
enjoy - who says Britain doesn't have talent!

On a sad note: My birthday came and went and no txt, email or call from my daughter - hey ho!

Happy 50th, 30th and 21st

This post is dedicated to Mike Monroy: who just completed his 50th Vaughan Town Program!!! (he's not even on the payroll!)
This also happened to be my 21st program as an Anglo/Master of Ceremonies (but I am on the payroll) and we had a birthday but it would be VERY rude of me to reveal Claire's age (hehe)

What an amazing group! No really!! This particular group bonded VERY quickly, partied VERY hard and had a VERY good time! It amazes me how it occurs and I wish I knew that magical ingredient - whatever it maybe I'm grateful for it, it makes the whole experience even more enjoyable for all.

The weather is currently threatening to snow on an almost daily basis and I can see the snow on the Gredos mountains in the distance; so its on its way for sure.

So the week, how was it.... ....we had shows, presentations, music, theatre, magic, improv, dance more than you can "shake a stick at" to use an idiom ;)
Karaoke night was awesome, everyone singing and having such a wonderful time - it proves to me it works and works well as a team and rapport building exercise the added advantage of reading English is just a lucky aside.

The theatre was excellent with alot of creativity and great expressiveness both visually and verbally. We had the joy of a great improv sketch with Marisa and Rob being parodied very well, but key was the points they picked up on and utilised (well done guys).

As always here are the memories of the week we shared

Vaughan Town - Gredos - Program 69

Rob (a fellow MC) has a new affirmation it is: JUST BECAUSE I CAN, DOESN'T MEAN I SHOULD! but if you know Rob; you know he probably will!

Missing in action

Okay so I've been gone for some time, did you miss me??

So what have you been up to I hear you cry... ...well I stood in a queue for 12 hours, that's right count them 12 HOURS. In order to get a National Insurance number boy Spain works slowly. So I finally managed to get to the front of the queue, only to be told I need to pay money to the bank to get my card, OK no problem (i thought) only it was, it was a holiday for the next three days in Spain and the banks were closed, the two days it will be open I was going to be in Portugal (though i didn't know that at the time!) and t
hen the next two weeks I have 2 camps back to back so yet another month without payment looms!?! Fingers crossed all will be well though...

However I did have Carrie fly all the way from London to join me in the queue - yeah I know how to treat a girl!
Caz says... I could say something soppy here, like 'Standing in a queue with you is nothing and better than being apart" but in fairness, it was just wet, cold and annoyed me that at the end of it I still wouldn't even be allowed a work visa! Though YES, it was great to see you, just not the way I had expected to spend our first 5 hours together after being apart for 3 weeks!

We stayed at a cheap hotel that night, and all was well. UNTIL a bloody riot broke out in Madrid at 3am. No idea what caused it but Spaniards were smashing up streets and all sorts, and the police were dressed in riot gear chasing them. It appeared on the news the following day but I still don't know the cause.

Next day Carrie surprised me with a trip to Portugal for my birthday; We arrived at the airport early - in fact we were the first to check in, then sat around chatting close to our gate (at least we thought) then we starting to make our way to the gate thinking it must be ready to board only to our surprise hear them announce LAST CALL for our flight; they were closing the gate!!! I did a dad run (Peter Kaye will explain), to the gate to see WE were the last two to board - the plane had 10 other people on it!
Caz says... How many times have you been at a boarding gate on time, and not been allowed to board for at LEAST 10-15 later? Well this would have been the ONE time!

So that dilemma over we relaxed and later (well actually at the same time, as they are an hour ahead) we arrived in Portugal. We arrived into Faro, and we were staying in Albufeira, which is only 40kms west, jumped on an 'express' bus thinking we'd be there in no time... Well the fact that driver managed to get us stuck in a car park for 20mins, only 2 mins after leaving the bus depot could have been an indication of how things were heading... We have no idea why, or how we ended up in the car park - had the bus driver never driven this route before? It took a passing lorry (YES! in the car park!) to lead him out before we were really on our way... An hour later we got to Albufeira and headed for our hotel which was apparently only a few hundred metres away from the bus station... ...RIGHT!!

After 2.5 hours and numerous rouch sketch maps drawn by locals, we found the hotel only to be told they had closed (reason unknown) and we had been upgraded to a different one - she drew another bad map explaining its 5 mins away and easy to find and so we headed off again, 1 hour later and after stopping in a bar for a beer out of desperation we found the next place - thanks to the english bar lady who can give directions and can draw a decent map!
Caz says... See, the english in the resort were good for something! :-) So much for easy!

So now tired and exhausted from the travels and having seen most of Albufeira, whilst lugging our luggage around, we crashed onto the beds. Chewy says.... It was at this point Dade was pleased that I insisted we only bring hand luggage!... It turns out our original hotel was only 50m from the bus station! - the OLD one! Hostelworld you need to update the details!

So Albuferia (in the Algarve) was to be home for the next few days, but from what we had already seen, we'd seen most of it! It was nice enough but I'm sorry to say not somewhere neither of us would be keen to go again.
Caz says... among other things it was a little too quiet, and not enough to do if you weren't content on just lazing on the beach - which we can both do, for a bit, but then we need more - like snorkeling, or climbing, or the like! (Admittedly as we did not have a car we could not explore further afield, nor was it peak season, but from what was made obvious lying on the beach was the thing to do here...)

It was full of Brits who had issues with food and fashion. You know the kind of people who back home would never dream of wearing those ghastly colours or socks & sandals together, but here it was okay. The kind of people who eat huge ice creams and claim they have a thyroid issue and THAT'S why their overweight. Speaking of puddings; as it was my birthday I asked for a Apple Pie, Carrie asked for a crepe - who got the better deal!?
Caz says... the crepe was sooooo good! Strawberries and chocolate sauce, and lashings of whipped cream! Apart from that crepe though, I was rather disappointed in the food, far from cheap offerings of fabulous seafood and more like medicore british half board food! And fries with EVERYTHING! I even had fries served to me at breakfast when i ordered an omelet!

Carrie got a great sun burn, pics coming (I hope)
Caz says... not on your life! - Yes mum, it was my typical first 'burn' of the year, and yes I did take sunscreen with me! It was the wind that deceived us to how hot the sun actually was...

She took me out for my Birthday to a nice Indian restaurant, where I tucked in 'Indian style'; eating with my fingers etc. Only to hear some older guy criticising every table around him and not even discreetly - almost like he thought we didn't understand English. I heard him ask his wife "are they English?" She replied "Yes" at which point he says "and he's eating with his hands, eerrrk". He also kept criticising another table - a guy with tattoos, to be honest I was SO close to speaking out, but didn't for fear it may ruin the night, so we him to his ignorance and enjoyed our own company.

Caz says... despite our negative comments on the place, we did have a great time, and it was very relaxing not to have to be anywhere or do anything at any particular time - plus we got to spend all that time together chilling...

So after 4 days relaxing in Portugal and sunning ourselves we headed back to Madrid - not without first having one last almost disaster - we booked a minibus to take us to the airport, he was 30 minutes late which only made things look like a repeat performance.
Caz says... we had thought paying the extra 4€ and saving us taking 3 buses and 2.5 hours was worth it! But in the end our Portuguese driver drove in true Portuguese style and didn't let us down and we arrived back with no complications, the flights to and from where very good (www.ryanair.com) and cheap ;) Caz says... you thought 1 penny seats were cheap, try 1 euro cent seats!

So we headed to Rob's to reclaim the rest of our cases and he kindly agreed to let us stay there as Carrie was flying back at a stupid hour the next morning and I had a program the next day.

Carrie and I headed out to the Tapas meet and greet (it's where all the volunteers for Vaughantown meet) you also get free food and drink ;) After meeting the Anglo's Carrie said we had to stop off somewhere she knew?? She knows no where? Thought I. Suddenly a plot was hatching!

Anyway I deduced it was Andy, then realised he was in the south of Spain? Chris? yes, she had met Chris once and we got on well, that must be it. O Boy was I in for a shock!
Caz says... I was just impressed I'd managed to keep it all a secret so long! Do you still hate Surprises Dade?

We turned up at the station, met by Chris, then Emma, walked into the bar and there was around 20+ people there i had meet through my time in Spain, teachers I worked with, Rob and his girlfriend, Spaniards from camps, trust me this was a military operation to get three groups of people who didn't know each other together at one place to celebrate my Birthday, I couldn't have managed it!!!
Caz says... I had wanted to get you all the way into the bar before you saw anyone, but Chris's directions of, its right near Alsonzo Martinez left out the bit about all the sides streets between the two!

I realised just how special Carrie is and what she was prepared to do, and I also felt shit because I had told her I didn't want to commit to anything because I didn't feel ready for a serious relationship with anyone and I knew that her being in London and I in Spain was very difficult for us both. I guess I need to look into just what I do want and what I'm prepared to offer, what I can say is it was the nicest surprise ever and totally unexpected and for that I thank her greatly and to all those who attended I thank you for making the effort and taking the time.

You sometimes don't realise the lives you touch and the difference you make but it's nice to know that sometimes you do get to see just how much people care.
Caz says... And you are worth caring about, HAPPY BIRTHDAY DADE!

A walk in the park

Well, after more excitement from Dade's part of Europe, what can I say from this side...

Last week, for me, was one of those weeks that both seems to drag by, but before you know it, its Friday already, you've survived the week and the weekend lies ahead of you. I was particularly looking forward to this weekend because for once, I was not working Saturday (i had a double shift on Sunday to make up for it!) AND the weather forecast was amazing (as i may have already pointed out in a previous post...).

I am loving the fact that its still light well after I get home from work these days, and it hasn't rained in ages (tho having said that it probably will now! sorry folks!).

So, not wanting to let a potentially gorgeous Saturday go to waste, I decided to head out of the London, and escape the rush for a bit.

Friday night I headed up to Amersham, and far far reaches of the London Underground system (which was actually overland by this stage), where Ellen picked me up. Had a girls night on at hers and then a very lazy Saturday morning, before another friend came round and we headed down to Marlow for a picnic by the river. Again, did i mention how gorgeous the weather was? We spent a lovely afternoon people watching, and were both amazed and astounded by the variety, and hidousity of outfits this sort of weather in April brings out!!

Saturday evening I spent at my Aunty Elaine's cottage near Great Missiden. It was ever so peaceful up there, and being able to lie outside in the garden was great. That is something I really miss here.

Sunday was another gorgeous day weather wise - tho sadly I worked from 9am-10pm, so while I got to see the day, did not get to benefit from it much!

So that's about it from this end...

Now we are almost mid way through another week and I am busy planning my trip out to Spain to see Dade for his birthday... only 13 more sleeps till I'm there .... ;-p

Dade is off in Salamanca this week being run raggered by Spanish kids. He's got no Internet access there so you'll all have to be patient along with me to find out what exciting tales he's got to tell....

London by foot

Well the Birthday bash was cool, we started in a pub across from us and was shortly joined by an elderly gentleman. As we sat there minding our business the gent started to twitch!
Weird huh! Well it got weirder - he then seemingly developed TORRETS!
He sat there trying to snap his fingers to the music well out of sync, we sat there trying not to draw attention to it, but boy did he manage the job by himself, by growling at us or walking around as batman!?

We were later joined by several of Carries friends and then moved onto the Thai restaurant, which was nice that is until Carrie nearly burnt the place down with her napkin!!!! :S

Anyway the following day we visited the Tate Modern Art Gallery - and was very unhappy that we couldnt go down the slide (they were way cool too 5 stories high), well we could but it meant queing for silly time, the gallery was full of wonderful and not so wonderful art pieces.

Really China you could make a fortune doing art now because some were nothing short of madness - either splats or just simply canvas in one colour!?! thats art?? really??

But some was wicked. This is a pic we managed to take and then got told off - we then had to escape being chased by several guards and a lion! no I lied sorry, there was no lion it was a tiger!!! oops I did it again (ala britney).

Anyway I couldn't help but smile when I saw this. See how long you can look at it without the need to smile.

We then walked (for miles, no kidding) around London, visiting Tower Bridge, London Bridge the Millenium Bridge, Westminister Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge - it would appear we are bridge spotters!!! eeekkk!! lol!
Anyway we found lots of chewing gum splats! (private joke), we walked along the Queens walk and didn't see her, so went to visit Buckingham Palace, Big Ben, Houses of Parliment,
Westminster Abbey & the London Eye (which was nice ;) )

Then went shopping around Covent Gardens - watched a Magician and a Juggler. Visited China Town again, which at this point we were starved and feeling tired this didnt help. We resisted the food - which was REALLY hard! :(
We arrived home tired and hungry - but was well worth the effort!!

Well its that time of year again, when you get a little older, a little wiser and you forget a dam sight more lol!

Carrie's just had a birthday, and it would be un-gentlemanly to say how old she is; but i'll give you a clue between 27-29 years!

She awoke to pressies from New Zealand, pressies from England and a card from Scotland. Sadly she had to work all day, but on the bright side we are off out tonight to a lovely Thai Restaraunt.
