Blog List, Scheduled Post Publishing on Blogger in draft

Have you tried out Blogger in draft, Blogger’s experimental features site, recently? Blogger in draft is a version of Blogger with features we’re trying out before we “publish” them to everybody on the main site. (See our original announcement: “Blogger... in draft.”)

If you’re feeling adventurous, all you need to do to try it out is log in to draft.blogger.com instead of www.blogger.com. If you see the blueprint logo then you’re in the right place.

Our two latest features, which you can try out now on draft.blogger.com, are:

  • Scheduled Post Publishing If you write a post on Blogger in draft and set the post’s date and time to some time in the future, we’ll schedule the post to appear on your blog at that time, and not before.
  • Blog List Add a blogroll to your blog’s sidebar. The Blog List is powered by Google Reader, so it can show when each blog was last updated and even include post titles and snippets.
Keep in mind these features are still being worked on, and let us know if you find any problems.

We have other page elements on draft, too:
  • Help your readers subscribe to your blog in their favorite feed reader with the Feed Subscription page element.
  • Add any of the thousands of Google Gadgets to your blog’s sidebar with our Google Gadget support.
  • Search over your blog, your Link Lists, or all the pages you’ve ever linked to with the Search Box.
We post the latest news about Blogger in draft to the Blogger in draft blog. Stop by often and write comments about how the draft features are working for you.

Fence Sitting

I'm thinking of doing Boot Camp. That's a six-week program of intense exercise taught by someone who is a hardcore athlete. I really want to do it. My reservations: being at there at 5 a.m.—that's currently the time I get up—and it costs $150—and that's kind of steep for me right now. I think I'm in good enough shape to do it. But I'm still on the fence. It would be a good kick in the butt, though.

I was thinking this morning that's it's been about a year since I made the decision to get in shape. I've lost around 60 pounds since then. I feel better than I've felt in years. And it's hard for me to believe that I was ever "that other person"—that fat woman who could barely get around. I still have a long way to go, but the distance is getting shorter.

Last year in April, I went to Williamsburg. While on this trip, I began making some lifestyle changes. I walked a lot. I tried to watch what I was eating. I started trying to live again. It had been a long time since I was truly alive. I was still in heavy grief. But I knew I had to make some changes. My health had been rapidly deteriorating for more than 18 months. I felt sick all of the time. My body ached. My own weight was getting impossible to haul around. My joints hurt. I couldn't even bend over. But much has changed.

It's amazing what a difference a year makes.

Low-carb Review Article

The other day, I came across this nice review article from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. It gives a thorough but accessible overview of the current state of research into carbohydrate-restricted diets, without all the fatophobic mumbo-jumbo. It points out a few "elephants in the room" that the mainstream likes to ignore. First of all, the current approach isn't working:

The persistence of an epidemic of obesity and type 2 diabetes suggests that new nutritional strategies are needed if the epidemic is to be overcome.
Preagricultural diets were low in carbohydrate:
In contrast to current Western diets, the traditional diets of many preagricultural peoples were relatively low in carbohydrate (1, 2). In North America, for example, the traditional diet of many First Nations peoples of Canada before European migration comprised fish, meat, wild plants, and berries. The change in lifestyle of several North American aboriginal populations occurred as recently as the late 1800s, and the numerous ensuing health problems were extensively documented (3-5). Whereas many aspects of lifestyle were altered with modernization, these researchers suspected that the health problems came from the change in nutrition—specifically, the introduction of sugar and flour.
Carbohydrate reduction leads to a normalization of appetite:
It may also be that the mere lowering of serum insulin concentrations, as is seen with LCDs, may lead to a reduction in appetite. In support of this idea, several studies have found that insulin increases food intake, that foods with high insulin responses are less satiating, and that suppression of insulin with octreotide leads to weight loss (27-29).
I can't believe it; all that fat isn't going to clog my arteries??
Several outpatient diet studies have shown reductions in CVD risk factors after an 8–12-wk LCKD, during weight loss, and during weight maintenance (21, 60-62).
The last paragraph is a zinger:
We emphasize that strategies based on carbohydrate restriction have continued to fulfill their promise in relation to weight loss and that, contrary to early concerns, they have a generally beneficial effect on most markers of CVD, even in the absence of weight loss. In combination with the intuitive and established efficacy in relation to glycemic control in diabetics, some form of LCD may be the preferred choice for weight reduction as well as for general health.

Home Again

What a week! I'm home and not sure what time it is. I've had two hours of sleep in 36 hours so I'm pretty sure I'm not on Pacific time anymore, not that I ever was.

The plane ride home last night was rough, thanks to the cold front marching across the plains. I'm not a fan of turbulence. I kept looking around the dark plane for other people slightly freaking out as I was (you know, restless, moving around, stuck in the middle and needing to walk the aisle). But everyone seemed so cool. I wasn't about to be the passenger who freaked out, so I put on my iPod and just breathed.

It all worked out well. I'm home and detoxing. Not that I had a lot to detox from, but I haven't exercised in a week and I ate a few more carb-based products than I usually do. I'm not beating myself up for any of it. I had a great time in California, stayed aware of my food intake, but I wasn't obsessed about it. That's new for me. Since getting to goal over a year ago, I've been a chronic obsessor. I guess this means I'm maturing! LOL

Today I've eaten lots of raw veggies and fewer carbs. Tonight I'll eat a little later than usual (eastern time) to accommodate my Pacific time body clock. On the menu is roasted sweet potatoes, asparagus and cauliflower - my triple-play comfort foods. Nothing a little pepper and garlic won't fix. Oh, and Parmesan cheese, too, for the cauliflower.

Tomorrow I'll hit the elliptical for at least 30 minutes and strength train for 45 minutes. I won't hit it hard. I want to ease my body back into the routine. It's only been a week, but why abuse the body that was in perfect performance mode this week? I walked and walked and climbed stairs and more stairs....all without losing my breath or feeling weak. It's times like this, when you're on vacation, that you can truly appreciate the hard work you've put into exercising your body. We don't work out just to work out. We work out for the purpose of moving smoother, without stiffness and being out of breath. My muscles are still there, even though I haven't formally worked them out in a week. They won't let me down. I know they won't be real happy with me around 9:30 tomorrow morning, but they'll fall back into place in no time.

So this next part has nothing to do with weight loss, but I had to post a photo of my adorable grandbaby Claire in her onesie and jelly shoes and sunglasses I bought her from Beverly Hills yesterday. She's destined for stardom, I know she is!

Announcing Google Weblogs (beta)

Update: This was an April Fools Day post. :)

Today we’d like to offer you a sneak peek at an exciting new product we’ve been working on: Google Weblogs.

Since Google bought Pyra Labs in 2002, we’ve been dreaming, planning, and implementing the next revolution in personal publishing: Google Weblogs.

Google Weblogs, or “GWeblogs,” or “Gblogs,” which will launch later this year in a public beta, is the next revolution in personal publishing. Here’s what you can expect:
  • Don’t limit yourself to “reverse chronological” publishing. Our advanced Google algorithms put your best content at the top of your blog. Even if your later work goes downhill your previous posts will still shine.
  • No more template languages to mess with or sidebars to get right. Our advanced Google algorithms automatically populate your blog’s sidebar with the most relevant possible content.
  • Stop worrying about your PageRank or your search engine optimization. Post directly into Google search results for maximum visibility.
  • Save your readers time and effort. We’ll automatically extract the most relevant sentence from your post for the index page, along with any necessary ellipsis. We'll also put some words in bold!
  • Your blog’s header will stay fresh with new images from our team of artists, each and every anniversary of a scientific achievement.
  • Unsure of what to post about? Just click “I’m Feeling Lucky” and we’ll “take care” of the rest!
Excited? So are we! Take a look at this sneak peek of Blogger Buzz, powered by Google Weblogs.

We’ve put together a quick video tour to take you through the highlights of Google Weblogs. Check it out!
